DESCRIPTION, COUNTRY OF ORIGIN, WORKING PROPERTIES: Comes from a smallish, relatively rare tree found in the forests of Central & South America & is reportedly somewhat brittle & difficult to work. It is very rare in general & fully figured pieces are even rarer & very expensive. It is also available in un-figured form, usually at a greatly reduced price. There is generally a problem with pith checking. The color, which can be quite bright on first exposure, & have a lot of red, darkens with age to a solid brown. Called "Snakewood" because of the fairly obvious snake-skin look of the figured portions.
