DESCRIPTION: These are from Ecquador and are used for small carvings. The insides are very white and similar to Ivory properies.
The Tagua Nut, commonly known as "vegetable ivory", earned its name from its ivory-like color and texture. With the near extinction of animal ivory, tagua nuts have become a highly valued commodity by artisans and consumers alike. In Ecuador, tagua is skillfully carved by artisans into figurines, keychains, Christmas ornaments, jewelry & boxes. Tagua nut, also know as vegetable ivory, is the seed of a tree similar to a palm but botanically not belonging to the palmaceus but to the ciclantaceus.
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Tropical rainforests of some South American countries, mainly Ecuador, Colombia & Venezuela, Ecuador fulfills most of the world’s demand.
BOTANICAL NAME: Phytelephas Aequatorialis Macrocarpa.
